# How to Inspect Your Roof From the Ground: A 60-Second Check

You don’t need to climb a ladder or hire someone to spot the obvious warning signs. Here’s how to inspect roof from ground level in less than a minute — and what to actually look for.

Most homeowners think roof inspections require getting on the roof. That’s not true. From your driveway or yard, you can spot 80% of the problems that matter: missing shingles, visible damage, and the early signs of leaks. We’ve trained hundreds of customers to do this themselves, and it’s saved them thousands in emergency repairs.

## The 60-Second Ground Inspection

Stand back from your house — at least 20 feet away — and look at the roof’s profile against the sky. You’re looking for three things:

**Sagging or dips.** A healthy roof is straight. If you see a valley or sag in the middle, that’s water pooling or structural stress. This is the single most important sign to catch early.

**Missing or curled shingles.** Scan the visible edges and valleys. Missing shingles are obvious. Curled or lifted shingles are harder to spot from the ground, but they catch light differently — they’ll look slightly raised or have a different texture than the rest.

**Granule loss.** Look at your gutters and downspouts. If they’re full of dark, sand-like material, your shingles are shedding. This happens with age, but if it’s sudden, it signals UV damage or a manufacturing defect.

## What You Can’t See From the Ground (And When to Call)

Flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights is where most leaks start — but you can’t inspect it properly from the ground. Same with the underside of shingles, ice dam damage, or hidden rot in the decking. If you see any of the three warning signs above, or if your roof is over 15 years old, a professional inspection is worth the investment.

We offer free 2-hour on-site inspections with a transparent quote — no pressure, no hidden fees. You’ll know exactly what needs fixing and what can wait.

## The Honest Truth About DIY Roof Checks

This ground-level check is a screening tool, not a replacement for a real inspection. It catches the obvious problems and gives you peace of mind. But roofs fail in ways you can’t see from below: ice dams, ventilation issues, deck rot, and flashing failures. If you’re buying a home, selling, or your roof is aging, get a professional involved.

We’ve been called in after homeowners missed problems that cost $15,000+ to fix. A $300 inspection today beats a $15,000 emergency later.
