# 5 Early Warning Signs Your Roof Is About to Leak

The worst time to discover a roof leak is when water is dripping into your bedroom at 2 a.m. The good news: your roof usually tells you it’s in trouble long before that happens. The early signs of a roof leak are often visible if you know what to look for. Catching them early can save you thousands in water damage, mold remediation, and structural repairs.

I’ve been doing this for decades, and I can tell you that most homeowners wait too long. They see a small sign, ignore it, and six months later they’re dealing with a ceiling collapse. Here are the five warning signs you should never overlook.

## 1. Granules in Your Gutters

This is the most common early sign of a roof leak that people miss. Asphalt shingles shed granules as they age—it’s normal—but a sudden increase means your shingles are deteriorating faster than they should. If you’re finding piles of dark, sand-like granules in your gutters or downspouts, your shingles are losing their protective layer. Once that layer is gone, water penetrates the shingle and finds its way into your home.

Check your gutters every few months, especially after heavy wind or rain. A handful of granules is fine. A cup or more? Time to call.

## 2. Curling or Buckling Shingles

Walk around your house and look at your roof from the ground with binoculars. Healthy shingles lie flat. Shingles that curl up at the edges or buckle in the middle are failing. This happens when moisture gets trapped under the shingle, or when the shingle is simply too old. Either way, curled shingles create gaps where water can slip underneath.

## 3. Visible Mold or Algae Growth

Dark streaks or green patches on your roof aren’t just ugly—they’re a sign that moisture is sitting on your roof longer than it should. This happens when shingles are worn, valleys are clogged, or drainage is poor. Mold and algae thrive in moisture, and where they grow, leaks often follow.

## 4. Sagging Roof Deck

This is serious. If your roof visibly sags or dips between the rafters, water has been pooling there and the wood underneath is rotting. This is not a “wait and see” situation. A sagging roof deck can collapse under heavy rain or snow load.

## 5. Water Stains on Ceilings or Attic Rafters

Yellow, brown, or gray stains on your ceiling or attic wood mean water has already found its way in. This is past the “early warning” stage, but it tells you exactly where the leak is coming from. Don’t paint over it—fix the source.

## What to Do Now

If you spot any of these signs, don’t panic. Many roof issues can be repaired without a full replacement. The key is acting fast. Water damage compounds quickly, and what starts as a small repair becomes a major one.
