What Those Dark Streaks on Your Roof Actually Mean

If you've noticed black streaks on roof shingles running down from your ridge line, here's the most useful thing I can tell you right away: in most cases, it's not rot, it's not mold, and it's not a sign your roof is about to fail. But that doesn't mean you should ignore it.

What's Actually Causing Those Streaks

Those dark, paint-like stains are almost always caused by Gloeocapsa magma — a type of blue-green algae (technically a cyanobacteria) that travels through the air and lands on your shingles. Once it settles, it feeds on the limestone filler that manufacturers blend into asphalt shingles to add weight and durability. As the algae colony grows, it produces a dark pigmented shield to protect itself from UV rays. That shield is what you're seeing.

It spreads from the top of the roof downward — which is why the streaks always run in one direction. Shaded areas and north-facing slopes tend to show it first because moisture lingers longer there. In LA's San Fernando Valley, we see it most on homes with mature tree canopy overhead.

When It's a Cosmetic Problem vs. a Real One

Here's the honest trade-off: algae alone won't destroy your roof overnight, but left untreated for years, it gradually degrades the limestone granules that protect your shingles from UV damage. That accelerates aging — sometimes by several years.

The bigger concern is what the streaks might be hiding. Algae growth often signals that moisture is sitting on your roof longer than it should. That same moisture can work into cracked or curling shingles, deteriorated flashing, or compromised valleys — and those are structural problems.

So the streaks are a prompt to look closer, not a reason to panic.

What I Actually Recommend

A soft-wash treatment (low pressure + algaecide solution) can remove the staining without blasting off the granules the way pressure washing does. If your shingles are otherwise in good shape — flat, granules intact, no curling — a cleaning buys you real time.

If the shingles underneath are already granule-bare, brittle, or lifting, cleaning is cosmetic at that point. You're better off putting that money toward a replacement conversation.

The only way to know which situation you're in is a proper inspection — not a drive-by estimate, an actual up-on-the-roof look at shingle condition, flashing, and underlayment.
